The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is mainly transmitted through sexual contact. To infect its host, HIV-1 employs its viral membrane surface trimeric envelope glycoprotein, composed of the receptor binding domain gp120 and the membrane anchored fusion protein subunit gp41. Pathogen surface proteins are initially detected by the immune system, as they are easily accessible to the antibodies. This feature explains why HIV-1 vaccine developers have traditionally considered the HIV-1 surface gp120/gp41 (gp160) proteins as good vaccine targets.
